We know that certain South American River turtles can do 'cloacal breathing', where they take some air into the cloaca, and absorb it. This does not replace lung breathing, however, and is used mostly when they need to stay under for a longer period.

We also know that several other species can do cloacal breathing while hibernating, sleeping, or in some other 'low energy' state.

If they can do it, probably some other species do it as well. It is not something that is at the top of the research funding list right now!

A minor detail: turtles don't really have 'butts'- they lack a true anus and their upper leg muscles do not attach in a way that forms the cheeks of mammalian butts.

They don't really breath in or out of their butts. In certain times of the year due to moisture, like some other reptiles, they can respire through exposed skin by diffusing Oxygen in through the skin and Carbon Dioxide out. This gas exchange occurs through the capillary beds in the skin and the circulatory system takes it from there. They do have a normal lung function like other animals but can also rely on cutaneous respiration so in other words, gas exchange can occur around the butt except inside since it is not exposed to the elements.

I think they were pulling your leg. Turtles don't have lungs in their butts.
