Hey Hoges :P

I'm from Oz as well and we're heading to the US in November for the first time. I'll just put the places on our list and hopefully that'll help you :)

San Francisco (Alcatraz, Cable Cars, Golden Gate Bridge)

Anaheim/Los Angeles/Hollywood (Disneyland, Universal Studios, Warner Brothers Studios, Mighty Ducks Hockey Game, Tijuana Tour, San Diego Zoo and Sea World Tour)

Las Vegas (Gambling, Grand Canyon Tour, Gambling, Pretty Lights...Did I mention Gambling?)

Washington DC (Monuments, White House,...you can do a tour in a shopping gopher thing (they call it a scooter tho) and see all the sites :P)

New York City (Nuff said really! Shopping, museums, Statue of Liberty, WTC memorial and a whole lot more!)

Nigara Falls/Toronto (Loads of water and some Canadians to booze with)

Nashville/Memphis (Titans Football game, Elvis, Graceland, Country music...Jack Daniels Distillary!)

Hope that helped some! Have a great time!

Although there are many places that are great to visit in the US, I'd have to recommend Washington, DC as a place where a visitor could gain the best knowledge of this country. The Smithsonian Institution's numerous museums alone would take days and days to go through, and each one is a gem. If you go, have a great time!
