Here's an expiration - Its a place that got a song, 'I left my heart in San Francisco.' (True).
Take for example, one gambling women Lily Coyte left an amount of money to maintain the beauty of the city. Every where you turn there is a view to enjoy.
I lived there for 7 years and really enjoy every minute of it. You wont get board, there is always a place to see.
Pier 39, Fort Point under the Golden Gate Bridge, Angle Island, Alcatraz, Wax Museum, Great America and the best transportation. Golden Gate Park, Salsalito. So much more.

To visit? To live? I think it's one of the best US cities, along with New York (I had New Orleans in my list of US favorites also before Katrina). It's a city with natural beauty, hills, water, and lots of things to see. From touristy, to ecclectic neighborhoods to theater/cinema (there are around 8 foreign/indie theaters spread out around the city), to museums. All kinds of great restaurants too. MOst weekends in the summer there are cultural festivals of some type (this weekend will be hawaiian for example). I highly recommend it.
