To assign such a superlative is to ignore the reality that most great leaders are complex figures who often have a dark side to match whatever positive traits they may possess. But that aside, I would have to choose Henry Ford, inventor of the automobile, a product that completely changed not only our culture, but also our physical landscape. I do not believe he was the best person, but I do believe that Henry Ford has had the greatest impact on history and the world, by damaging the global environment far more severely than any nuclear weapons to date ever have. Henry Ford, if anyone is left in the future to think about him, will be remembered someday as the man who did more to bring about the end of human civilization than any other person before or since.

The biggest effect in history... I might chalk that one up to the marvelous Mr. Karl Marx, whom's effect has been unfortunately dim and destructive. The cold war, Middle East crises, Korea, Vietnam, Russia, The USSR, The Soviet Union, and Anti-Communist sentiments in the United States all find themselves within his legacy. The best effect on history, however, is much harder to find. I must agree with Marc, Buddha has had no negative effect whatsoever on History, and has brought about a peaceful and loving religion.

Harry Truman in making the decision to use the Atomic Bomb at the end of WWII. He saved American lives, brought the war to an end, and effected the greatest change in global thinking regarding the use of nuclear weapons from that day on. There has not been another nuclear bomb used on another society since 1945. The world has been safer knowing that when the free world is backed into a corner and our survival is at stake, we will use the bomb again. Using the words of TR Roosevelt: Walk softly, but carry a big stick. Truman made the difficult decision in the most crucial period of our history. He remains the icon of what it takes to lead and keep us in a free and safe democracy. He is perhaps our greatest President.

Whether youre a christian or not, I would say Jesus Christ. Even if you look at him as just a historical figure, he is still widely known, talked about, studied etc. on a global scale. For example, Martin Luther King Jr. was a great man, who brought great change, but it's really only a relevant change to us in the United States, no offense to Mr. Luther.
