My niece has a bilateral cleft lip and a wide open cleft pallet. She has to undergo i think 7 surgery's for it. The doctor said that it is genetic and a couple of my cousins have it. He also said in many cases it can happen from doing meth while pregnant. My sister didn't do any drugs while pregnant. so many differant causes

Cleft palate is usually an hereditary condition most often found in developing countries. It's easily corrected by surgery.

Cleft pallette is formed when a fetus's lip tissue fails to separate during development.

I don't think the cause is known.
Its just one of those congenital defects that happen from time to time.
