The Clash.

The Ramones never displayed any sort of evolution, and after a while, playing the same riff will turn into a bore (AC/DC, anyone?).

The Clash, however, showed a remarkable ability to change. Compare the raw punk sound of their debut to their more rock oriented second album. Then, contrast those primal sounds with the epic sprawls of London Calling and Sandinista. Those things were double and triple albums, with a million ideas coexisting at once. That's talent. Then they made a few pop tunes that stood out from an album that shows burn-out. Then there's Cut the Crap, but let's pretend that one didn't happen.

Overall, in a span of 8 years, the Clash did more than other bands do in decades.

oh c'mon!! ;)

The Clash were more imaginative, more socially conscious, even more cynical than the Ramones ever were. And they weren't about to go gently into obscurity either ... ever take a listen to B.A.D.? I probably danced to more than my fair share of the Ramones back in the day ... all three chords of them. But the Clash were more socially and musically adept, hands down.

What you can say for both bands is that they started something big. Along with a few others on both sides of the Atlantic, they gave birth to the punk music scene in the late 70's, which spawned new wave, metal, reggae/ska and garage, etc. in the 80's, which frankly didn't do much of anything in the 90's but at least influenced hip hop and world music, which leaves us today with some remarkably rich and interesting stuff to hear.

Both rock. But the Clash ruled.

I love the Ramones, but in terms of who was more influential it would have to be the Clash. Their message is probably one of the most powerful in terms of punk music. If they werent any Clash, there probably wouldnt be any Dead Kennedys which means that there would be no RAGE, which we all know is the best!!!!!!
