The atmosphere of Neptune is composed mostly of hydrogen and helium, with a tiny amount of methane, which accounts for the planet's blue appearance. Neptune's blue color is much brighter than that of Uranus, which has a similar amount of methane. Therefore, an unknown component is thought to cause the intense color.

Neptune's blue colour is largely the result of the absorption of the red light by methane in the atmosphere besides there is some additional as-yet-unidentified chromophore which gives the cloud the rich blue tint.
