some of them were teachers once. but you're right, most of them are politicians who have no idea what it takes to run a succesful school. education is the one profession where everybody is an expert, though. you would never tell a doctor how to perform surgery or an architect how to build a building but everyone seems to have an opinion on what's best for education. and the sad part is, teacher's-the only ones qualified to have an opinion- are rarely if ever given an opportunity to express their views on education. i'd say it's mostly arrogance and lack of appreciation for how hard teaching really is. everyone seems to think it's easy but most of them wouldn't last 5 minutes in a classroom. more control needs to be given to teachers and less to politicians regarding policy decisions and funding. our education system wouldn't be so disastrous if left to the real 'experts'.

I must point out the flaw in your analogy. The NEA is run by teachers, just as the AMA is run by doctors. Both groups have a lot of influence with the policy makers, but neither should have complete autonomy without oversight.
Having said that. . . Yes, it is really frustrating as a teacher to have every crackpot politician use public education as a whipping boy and come up with a new scheme to "reform" the system before the last set of "reforms" has been adequately tested. I just think we have to make the point in a more insightful manner.

A lot of people who design curriculum and educational policy are former teachers who went on to pursue Masters degrees after spending some time in the classroom. A full-time teacher would never have enough time to get into policy design while fulfilling his or her classroom responsibilities. There are lots of different M.Ed programs, including ones that specialize in curriculum design, school administration and learning technology. Very few M.Ed programs focus on actual, practical in-classroom skills.

Look at hospitals that are run by doctors. They are financial disasters. Teachers are educators, not administrators. They have no business sense. Neither do doctors. Just because you got your Masters in Education, that's not the same as an MBA in Business. You owe it to the kids to do what you do best and thats teach.
