Not likely, but it is possible that having sex will create a fungus to grow in your vagina-- the most likely candidate is a yeast infection. As my gyno told me just a few weeks ago, your vagina has an ecosystem of its own. Anything can throw it off and it's nothing to worry about.

Yeast is a bacteria that grows naturally in your vagina. When the right environment is created (pH is thrown off, moisture is increased, you're taking an antibiotic, are diabetic or yeast is introduced from an outside source), yeast can grow like crazy which will cause itching, burning and a really gross discharge. This fantastic phenomenom is known as a yeast infection. You can get yeast infections from a poor diet, from wearing a wet bathing suit too long or really anything that throws off the balance... including sex. It's a common occurence, but when you consider how many people are having sex and NOT getting yeast infections, it's really nothing to worry about.

If you get yeast infections a lot or are worried, you can eat a lot of yogurt or take acidophilus supplements. These little cultures help to maintain the natural balance of your vagina. If you think you currently have a yeast infection, you can wait it out as it will probably go away on its own OR you can go to the doctor and get a prescription for diflucan OR you can get an over-the-counter cream/suppository. They tend to work pretty well.

However, if you're thinking about having sex and worried about a fungus growing your vagina-- don't think twice about it. There are more important things to worry about-- STDs and getting pregnant are on top of the list.

Good luck!
