What's so secretive? How do they vote? What makes the bond of brotherhood so special? Kind of nervous about the Mason's but feel they do help society. What's up?

Hello, I am a member of a rather esoteric branch of Masonry, The American Co-Masons. We admit women as well as men to all rites and ceremonies. So we are a little different that what you might think of as your grandfather's Freemasonry.

I am not at liberty to tell you exactly what happens at an Initiation. I will speak in generalities of what I may. Initiation means to begin. We help the candidate on her or his journey toward improving themselves and improving the world. They move from being outside to being an Entered Apprentice.

We show them symbols which we encourage them to research and to apply to their own conduct. We in no way hurt or embarrass them. This is not some rude college fraternity. We teach them how to behave in Lodge, and a little bit of how to behave outside.

Our bond of Brotherhood is extremely special. We trust each other in ways that you would hope you could trust your biological brothers but seldom can. We work to be trustworthy. Understand that while we are NOT a religion, we are a system of morality. And those who meet under the banner of Freemasonry work to practice being just, upright and free. Breaking a trust might have lead to death in Nazi Germany and in certain Fundamentalist run countries (yes, being a Freemason is still a death sentence in some places).

We vote in secret ballot. We vote our conscience. No one asks who voted how. Not even the person running the Lodge, the Worshipful Master (an elected office BTW) has the right to ask who voted which way. Pretty special thing, voting. We take it very seriously.

Many Freemasons helped found the United States. Many helped change England and Scotland for the better. Some helped liberate Brazil and Mexico. Some were very good people, some were not. All were just humans. The male only rite has the Shriners whose hospitals help kids with burns and spinal injuries.

If you wish more info, ask me or any other Mason. Feel free to click on the link below to read more or to contact my Order for more information. Whatever you do, if you need help and you are just, upright and moral, Masons are usually around to help.

Why don't you go to your nearest Freemason group and talk to them? They'll probably tell you what they're about.

They pretty openly accept initiates now--whether you get into the higher ranks and whatnot is up to them, but it's not as esoteric (secret-society) as it used to be. From what I hear (and from the ones I know), they're a good bunch of folks--friendly humanitarians, the lot.

Also, as a side note, they tend to lean on the Judeo-Christian side. Freemasonry is not a religion, it's more of a structure to follow on the path for knowledge. Check out the wikipedia article on 'em, it's pretty good.
