Do a lot of research and decide exactly what kind of snake you want. You can go to http://www.kingsnake.com and check out some care sheets for different kinds of snakes. Good starters are kingsnakes and corn snakes. Have your mom look at the pages with you and that way she'll know that you are serious about really taking care of it. You can make a list together about what you need to do for a snake. And the things that you need to buy for it. She'll see that the snakes aren't too hard to care for if you do the research before hand. They aren't very messy and they don't stink at all like some other pets. Make her see that a snake can make a great pet. Maybe if she sees how serious you are about getting a snake and the steps you're willing to take to do it right she might agree to it.

If your mother is the kinda parents we are, the first and most important thing you have to convince her of is that you are actually going to take care of it, feed it, (they usually eat live mice and things, NOT canned "snake-food") and give it a good home.

You HAVE TO actually educate, not only yourself, but your mother and every other person in the house about snakes! They have special needs and if they are not cared for properly they DIE! They are sneaky devils and if you do not store them properly, they ESCAPE! ( there is probably still a 4 foot "Cincuate" living on wild mice somewhere in our last house up in Ecatepec.)

All that being said, snakes make really cool pets IF you take care for them. My 12 year old son has had "Roy" a Royal Python for 4 years now and he's a real family favorite. My wife, who couldn't even look at a snake or a mouse four years ago, now regularly feeds Roy his mice when my son isn't around. Our little Schnauser would probably die of boredom if she didn't have Roy to stare at 4-5 hours a day.

My suggestion to handle your mother and others, you should do what my son did when he wanted a snake 4 years ago, he got us all watching "Steve Irwin" on the Discovery Channel every night!

Take her with you to the pet store and have one of the people there talk to her about it. Given some info (from an "expert" or just someone who isn't you)...other than OMG! NO WAY! THOSE THINGS ARE DANGEROUS AND GROSS! will really help her understand that different people like different types of pets and a snake is just as safe as any other pet considering you're well informed on proper handling and care. ^_^ Good luck!

Why the heck would you want a snake?! My brother had a snake once and it had babies so we had a total of 19 snakes...Some of the babies got loose in the house and like 2 months later I saw one in my closet...Snakes are bad!

First, ask her for a tattoo, nipple piercing or something more absurd. Then after she has stopped screaming, ask for a snake. They key is compromise. She needs to think you want something or want to do something that is worse, then by comparison a snake won't be that bad.

just be really persistant! I now have 8 snakes, 5 ball pythons, 1 kingsnake, and two corn snakes. usually parents let down their guard and that's whenyou have to be most persistant.

you don't need to find best way...just get a snake with you and make here aware...just like a warning. It has to work.
