Body language can tell you a lot about what's going on inside someone. If they have their arms folded, that usually means they're feeling closed-off and uncomfortable, and maybe grumpy or depressed.

Wow, I had never noticed this before I will have to pay more attention.
I would say because they are closed off. Closed or crossed arms is a signal of not wanting to communicate. Uptight.

I know that my Vietnamese friends do that in church as a sign of respect. Like we fold our hands or purse our hands in church, they fold there arms. So it may not mean what you think.

Don't know, but it portrays being closed off, being stand-offish... it's not good social communication to fold your arms.

guarding ones self. it's a barrier. usually shows a certain amount of distrust... are the hands just resting on the arms, or gripping the arms? how they are using their hands is a sign of frustration or patience... or impending judgement... or judgement.

It's a sign that they are closed off to other people. They don't want anyone to talk to them.

They feel awkward and closed off in that situation.
Or they have a gaping shirt on.
