my boyfriend and i have two tanks in our house. one is a 55 gallon tank and the other is 155.
in the 55 gallon one we have alot of mollies,an eel,two catfish and two angel fish....
in the big tank we have about 25 cichlids and a few catfish. these are the best fish to get if you want decent size-oscars are good too but can get pretty huge so you only want about 3-5 of them.
the cichlids come in many colors and can get to be about 8-10 inches in length so for a 55 gallon fishtank you can probably get about 10-12 of them and do fine. they are pretty aggressive so don't mix them with any other type of fish other than the catfish to clean up the algae on the bottom of the tank.
angel fish are nice too but are schooling fish so you need to have several in the tank at once and also don't do well with other fish....

I have a 55 gal tank. I've had Cichlids, but they got too territorial and started killing all the others. I've had Red Belly Pacus, had the same problem as with the Cichlids. I've had Bala sharks, Danios, mostly semi-aggressive schooling fish, enjoyed them. But by far...my favorite have been the Fancy Tail Guppies. They multiply beautifully. I love a full tank full of color. They are so easy to maintain and clean too.

Your best bet would to be to get tropical fish.Angel fish would be my best guess. They get quite large and they live a long time in the right conditions.
But I would not put goldfish in your 55 gal with or without your fish.Even thought I think goldfish are beautiful, they are very dirty.
Or you could put oscars in your tank. You can buy large ones that cost a lot of money or you can buy baby ones and have the enjoyment of watching them grow.
Your chose.

Silver dollar tetras, as long as the tank is in a "quiet" area of your house.
They grow to be about 6 inches, though some can grow larger. They prefer to be kept in groups of six or more. They are primarily herbivorous, but will eat brine shrimp and tubifex worms from time to time. And they have an awesome glow in UV light.
The bad? They're quite skittish. You cannot keep any life plants in your tank, as they will eat them. You will need to keep plenty of plastic plants and other hiding spots for them, as when they are threatened, they need to hide. They may also rearrange your gravel when you're not looking. They also aren't very hardy fish and are very picky about their water parameters (0ppm for ammonia and nitrite, less than 20ppm for nitrates, and their pH has to stay around 6.8). I've read that they prefer very soft water, but my water around here is very hard, and I've never had any problems with my little guys.
In fact, I, too, have a 55-gallon tank. I have two silver dollars, one male betta, seven neon tetras, three fancy-tailed guppies, three zebra danios, four cory catfish, and three African dwarf frogs.
Remember to cycle your tank before you add your fish.
Good luck!

Obviously Angels,
Gouramies, all types,
Red Tailed Black Shark,
Cardinal Tetras - Yeah, I know they are NOT "decent-sized," so get a dozen or so, likewise Hatchets.
Female Betas
Clown Loach
Glass Catfish,
OR
specialize in Oscars, they come in many colors
OR
look into Cichlids, they are mostly incompatible with community tanks but can often be kept together and are quite remarkable and come in many varieties.

Get an Irridescent Shark...sounds vicious but are totally compatible w/all tropical fish(big and small) and looks like a real shark! Most pet stores have them. They do get large(which is the cool part), but again, they don't bother nobody! I've had one for about 5 yrs. & he's? about 12-15" long. He's like a real pet now--hits the glass when he's hungry!! You have to have a heater (tropical) I may have to find him a home if he gets much bigger....mines a 40 gal ! !

it all depends on what type of tank you want to run. you got fresh, salt, and brakish. for fresh you really want to keep aggressive with their kind. but mild and easy life fish can be mixed. are you looking for an active tank or a calming tank? this is what you have to decide about. if your going salt then you should save the bucks and go for the nice exotic fish. but your prolly goin the fresh route so in that case get some tetras (cardinals), 2 black sharks, some rosy barbs, rainbow sharks, albino rainbow sharks. this will give you tank an assortment of color. but if you dont want to go that route then go to your pet store and see what they will prolly suggest. be careful cause they will prolly sent you the expensive way lol.

Oscars grow up to about 14" and they have such a great personality. You can get them to eat out of your hand. They are fun to watch and swim in a very majestic fashion. If you feed them goldfish, which you shouldnt too often since they have no nutritional value, after swallowing the goldfish, they spit the scales out of their gills. I recommend getting 2 or 3 very small oscars. They grow very fast. Tiger oscars look best. Good luck with whatever you decide.

i will declare that the Oscars can rather mean, and are ok in a fifty 5 tank. yet once you're searching for for a extra exciting fish i could say convict cichlids. they breed truthfully, have long existence, extra lively than Oscars and the are low fee. they're mean too, mine killed an Oscar that exchange into thrice his length. the only undesirable ingredient is they could eat you plant in the event that they're stay.
