I've been using it since November but I
thought it was only illegal if you sell the
CDs. I am wondering if I could get in
trouble just for burning them. How do the authorities find you ?

It depends really on what you've downloaded, which country you're in, and whether you plan to give the cd to someone else or not.

If the content itself is public domain, or you have permission from the author of it to download and share it, then it's perfectly legal to download and burn it.

You might find that in most places, it is illegal to download most commercial content, however, the process of burning it to cd may not be illegal. Your best bet would be to research the copyright laws.

By the way, for those people out there who think downloading music off the internet is illegal, it's not always. Many artists make their music freely available to download, and you are in every right to do it. MP3s are not illegal, copying music to which you have no right to copy it might be illegal though.

Downloading off Limewire isn't automatically illegal either, it's what you are downloading that can be the issue.

It depends on several factors. It depends on what you are trying to burn. If you are trying to burn copyrighted material, then obviously it is illegal, but if you are trying to burn material that has no copyright information, then it is legal.

Another factor is where you live. In some countries, the use of P2P software (such as LimeWire, Morpheus) is illegal for a start. So if you live in such a country, the very act of you downloading and installing LimeWire is illegal, irrespective of what you download. I live in Canada where it is legal to use P2P software.

Yes, Limewire and other Peer to Peer companies give you an option to pay for the usage of there software client but not the files that you are coping from one PC to the next... so yes it's illegal. But everybody does it... well at least until they get caught, lose there computer, go to court, pay fines up $250,000 and be band from using there ISP (Internet Service Provider)... I'm it only a matter of time until you caught... so go for it!

No, its not, if its for personal use only. If you try to sell it, then it becomes illegal. Just like recording a movie on a vcr. Legal til ya try to sell it.

From my stand point the only way donwloading things is illegal is if you are selling the copies you made for your own profit.
