It depends where your business is going to be located (as this is an Indianapolis board, I would think you'd have an Indiana component) and what requirements each state for in and out of state businesses.

For Indiana check: http://www.in.gov/ai/business/ for business rules, procedures to start a business, etc.

For Illinois: http://business.illinois.gov/

Best of luck to you!

The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in.

I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.

Associations may be a good avenue to explore. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* Smart Business for Contractors: A Guide to Money and the Law by Jim Kramon
* The E-Myth Contractor: Why Most Contractors' Businesses Don't Work and What to Do About It by Michael E. Gerber
* Contracting in All 50 States: Who to Contact and General Licensing Requirements for Every State by R. L. Bryson

Your question was in the Indianapolis category but since you mentioned Illinois in your question...

Illinois Specific:
* How to Start a Business in Illinois: With Forms by Edwin T. Gania, Mark Warda
* How to Start a Business in Illinois by Entrepreneur Press

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!
