They reserve the right to defend themselves? Either way they are tiny and could not prevail without help if things got dicey. Do you agree or is that absurd? Do they need help or can they take care of this situation by themselves?

Your question shows a lack of understanding, a republic is a kind of nation, so there is no either/or there. In Israels case, they are a Constitutional Theocracy.
