I am one of sixteen applicants (and this doesn't include the applicants that were not chosen) interviewing for one of two openings in the largest school district in the county in which I live. Is there really a teacher shortage?

Just a good teacher shortage.

It depends on the area and the subjects. There are a lot of applicants for some positions and very few for others.

Next time anybody goes to a school, look carefully at the people who works there: most of the teachers are going to retire in the next years and there are not enough students at college who want to teach. Some districts have to hire people retired from other professions (good, more experience) or even from other countries.

Not only teacher, it happens the same with nurses.

I believe that there is a shortage.. not shortage for teachers but a shortage of good teachers.. Teachers being paid poorly is the main reason I believe people are not going to school as teachers.. Who would want to teacher anyways? They are blamed for everything and the USA has been declining with math and english test scores for over the 50 years..

Maybe if the image of being a teacher improved there could be more teachers.. maybe even good teachers..

There is an extreme shortage of caring, dedicated, intelligent teachers. However, there are many, many people with teaching credentials that sit on their rears all day long and collect a paycheck.

Out of the sixteen applicants you mentioned, I would bet a month's salary that no more than three would be up to the challenge of preparing our children for the future!

I honestly don't know. If there is a teacher shortage then I don't blame them. Teachers are the have the most important job in the Unites States and we the American people treat them like second or third class citizens. We pay them peanuts to lead and guide our children into tommorrows future. Teachers are the most overworked underpaid profession out there, except maybe CNA's. If there is a shortage maybe the goverment will notice and increase pay so more good people will open there lives and graciously lend there lives to the education field. I hope you get your job and remember we are counting on you.............

I believe there are plenty of teachers looking for jobs. There may be a shortage in a certain area (such as math or science). The problem is, is that schools are cutting the amount of staff and faculty. The class sizes are getting bigger and bigger. Perhaps there is a shortage of "highly qualified teachers"???

I believe there is a shortage of GOOD teachers. Keep trying, it'll work out eventually. Maybe there is no shortage in your particular area, but there are shortages in certain areas. Usually the least desireable places to teach. Go figure.

I believe there is a "good" teacher shortage. Through K-12 I've only had 2 teachers that paid attention to me and really made a difference when it came to caring about my studies.

I think its both a teacher shortage AND a school site shortage. I mean, class sizes would be reduced if there were more schools. To build more schools, you need teachers to fill them up. Plenty of students, not enough teachers and schools.

I think so well at least not really good ones, being a teacher I have taught with teachers that I would never put my kid in their class. Some people want to be teachers but are not cut out to actually do the job or deal with the kids

well it depends on the position you're applying for.

They're may not be a shortage in High school but may be in Elementary, and then only in math or science. You have to find out where the shortage is and exploit that to get a job.
