I like the good old fashioned King James Version. I recently bought me the New King James Version, I can't understand most of it, I'm use to the old style scripture.

I knew my daughter (12) would never understand the KJV, so I bought her a Bible writter where she could understand it, she can, me and my dad (65) can't it drives him crazy, he keeps asking me just what kind of Bible is that. I tell him one in words SHE will understand.

I read the woman's bible. Basically it is an amercan standard version with pages clearly marked as passages to help understand the bible with specific female encounters of God and every day occurances that help us see God is always around us. There is a similar version for teens. and for children and for men. I don't think it matter's which version you are reading as long as it's educational. Oh, by the way , the king's men included shakespeare, so the 12 men of king james who rewrote the bible in the oldest form of modern English was a poet. Wonder how your husband feels about that?

I prefer the King James. It is the most reliable. The RSV, for example used an alternative Greek manuscript. It has subtle and not so subtle differences that reduce the divinity of Jesus. It removed the last dozen verses of Mark.
I have an interlinear Greek/English New Testament that shows where there are translation issues even with the King James.

The King James versions the most exact translation - but it can be hard to read - I also use the NIV New International Version - it is easier to read, but has been known to loos the translation in spots.

International version-- and start in the new testament. It's easier to read and makes the bible much more understanding. The old testament is the hardest to get though. Good Luck and God Bless!

I use the NASB (New American Standard Bible) most.
I like to read the King James version too.
I also like the NIV (much to the horror of my parents.)

I have a KJV and NIV translation of the bible, and I like both. For quiet time, I like to use my KJV but for my bible studies I like the NIV.

I really really like the NIV version and I've been reading it for a long time. I would advise that version for a 12year old.
