Unfortunately while you are living at home, it is up to your parents what animals they want to let into the house. While that is frustrating, it is the way of things. Be as responsible as you can around the house. Do your chores without being asked and even help out when you aren't. Show your mother you can take care of yourself and a pet. Keep in mind that rats are social animals and need a good amount of space to play. You will need to get a couple of rats together (either same sex pairs or at least one of the pair neutered) for them to be happy, plus you will need to be able to afford the cage (which can cost more than a hundred dollars depending on where you purchase it and what kind you get), and any other supplies you don't already have. Think about the work involved and make sure that you're up to the challenge too :)

Rats are intelligent, sweet and have lifespan of about 2-3 years. I have had about 30 over the last ten years and would rather have one than any other pet. They are affectionate and don't smell like other pets do unless you let the cage get dirty. They are cleaner than cats and groom often. They take up little space and if you were my kid I'd say buy a pair of females and I will take you there and we'll buy everything and let's go right now! I'd buy from a breeder but pet stores are ok. If you get girls get two! They are the BOMB!!!!

Rats make really cool pets, but I know a LOT of people who are racist against them just because they are rats. Maybe you could offer to keep the animal outside? If it doesn't get too hot out there. I kept a rat outside in Newport Beach. My friend kept a rat as a secret in her dresser, but I don't recommend that!

I have pet rats, tell her that I am a 59 year old grand mother & would not have any other kind of pet. They are very clean, litter trained (in their cage) very smart, trainable, tame, playful,
very inexpensive to feed. They only live 2-3 years that's the hard part. You HAVE to clean their cages almost every day mainly because they like to play a lot.

I used to raise mice and almost bought a blue rat, but I never did.
You may never convince them. So many people are scared of or hate rats for various reasons.
Try taking them to the pet store to see they are very smart and sweet as pets.

Just dont get a rat. Get a puppy, kitten, bunny, hamster, guinea pig or some thing else. Rats stink and they are dirty. But if you really want one beg your mom for one. Or save up the money yourself.

You basically need a good size cage.
