Is this a 318? Does the oil pump drive off of the distributor shaft? Is there a hex slot in the bottom of the distributor shaft? You can roll the engine around a little to get it right. Then be sure that when you get it slid in that the engine is at TDC and the distributor is pointed right at the number 1. This will allow you to start it up and adjust the distributor with the advance disconnected, set it with a timing light at 12 degrees. If it gives any preignition, back it off 1 degree. If it deisels when you turn it off, advance 1 degree. Good luck.
