Here in my corner of Scotland, our power supply is safe. I have only ever experienced a blackout once and it lasted about five minutes.
We make more energy than we use so supply is not a problem and we don't get winds strong enough to knock the pylons down.
Still I am prepared, we have a camping stove and gas as well as more candles than we will ever use. We have loads of batteries, two way radio and a couple of cell phones.
ALSO a car with a battery to powerstuff and an altinator to charge it.
Oh and tons of bottled water!

Get out of town if you can. I'd wait until the second or third day to avoid the inevitable gridlock.
Get a case or two of water.
Get as much non-perishible food as you can. If you have to subsist on MREs, you can probably go through one every two days in this heat - they usually ahve about 3500 calories in each.
Get a pack of batteries for a small radio.
Make sure you have the necessary medication.
Check on elderly neighbors and family to make sure they're okay.
Plenty of books and well-contained candles.

You can get tips on how to build and emergency kit at: www.ready.gov or www.providentliving.org. I have a 72 hour kit, which has bedding, toilet paper, flashlight/batteries, candles/matches. I also have food and water along with toiletries. I keep all of this is a rubbermaid tub so if we need to evacuate we can just grab it and go. It's also a good idea to keep copies of birth certificates and other important documents in a fire/waterproof safe or container. The website www.beprepared.com sells freezed dried food and other emergency preparedness products. Good luck

I think about getting prepared, but never seem to do it. We do have a battery operated lantern and a flashlight. We have enough cat food & litter for the cat. Probably enough food for a few days. A little bottled water. One bandaid. I better get more organized. Also, all of our vital records and important stuff are not all in one folder. If we had to vacate, we should have that stuff in one large envelope or box and take it.

Since I live in Florida, we prepare for loss of power in case of a hurricane. We have battery power that we can run our tiny tv on to get news. Since we own a motorhome which has a generator, we can bring that to our house and plug up our refrigerator.
For lights, we have flashlights and extra batteries. We just do without air conditioning and fans which is tough.

The most important thing you want first is firearms and plenty of ammunition, Because if you stock up on all the basics and others haven't they may decide to take yours.
