No, it's more of a symbolic thing. It doesn't even matter if you wear a ring, because a ring is just there to show that you're married. What really matters is that you loved someone enough to marry them.

It is normally on the left hand, next to the pinkie.
However, I have heard it is not the same for all countries and other places have different traditions.
Also, some people may have lost part/all of the "wedding finger" in an accident and so instead wear it on a different finger or on the other hand.
Bottom line - you should wear it next to your left pinkie unless there is a real reason not to. Single people will look for a ring to see if you are married, and your spouse may not understand if you choose not to wear it there unless you talk to her/him about it.

The wedding band goes on the left hand on the ring finger, then on goes the engagement ring. The left is closer to your heart.

When people will look to see if you are married, they look at the finger next to your pink...on the left hand. The thing is, if you wear it somewhere else they may think it is any old ring.

well it's suppossed to be the left in most cultures but i guess if you want to make people wonder you would always wear it on the right

i guess, literally it doesnt. but i wouldnt want to wear it on any other hand.
