Say we're talking about investments. If an investor buys 500 shares of stock, some at $3.50 per share and some at $6.00 per share. If the total cost was $2187.50, how many shares of each stock did the investor buy? This is a perfect example of a problem that has to be solved with a system of two linear equations.

it's sometimes useful to solve something in terms of one of the variables, and "black box" the rest. Let's say for example, ranking canned soup in terms of sodium content, without consideration for what type of soup, just rank by sodium content. Then, when you have your list, you can eliminate the kinds you don't like, and see what's left, and how they rank. This is particularly useful if you're a dietician working for a medical industry.

ok seriously, it would help sharpen ur logic skills since u end up with finding out that "since x is this and x+y is that, then y has to be this." u can apply that to any area where u need basic problem-solving whether it's at work or at home.
