Whats up with the little strip on the western side?? Did Texas just not want to touch Colorado and Kansas?

Good question. That area, the "panhandle" of Oklahoma, is actually the result of an error in survey of the region. When the region was originally surveyed that area got "lost" and when the mistake was discovered, Texas, Colorado and Kansas were already states. As a result that area was included in the "Indian Territory", one day to become Oklahoma. For a short period of time that area was dominated by one man (sorry, can't think of the name) who declared that his "nation" and tried to seize it from the U.S. Obviously the ploy did not work. Anyway, that is why Oklahoma is shaped the way it is.

Under the Compromise of 1850, Texas was paid $10million to cede northern claims that later became parts of Colorado and Kansas. When it was pointed out that extending Kansas as far as the Texas border (all the way across to the east) would take away too much Indian lands, they moved the Kansas border north. What was left was no man's land.

"Oklahoma, where the wind comes sweepin' down the plain..."

If it was shaped differently the wind wouldn't sweep down the plain.

You're right. Kansas and Colorado didn't want Texas' cooties, so they used Oklahoma's sweepin wind to keep them away.

The strip is there to make people like you ask questions.

That was all part of the indian territory before the run, it's where the government sent all us indians so that we could live forever in peace until they found out what a great place it was. we also intent to smack the sh@#$t out of Texas some day.
