i'd wait @ least six weeks, that being the minimum. by waiting longer you'll prevent any type of infections or closing up of the new holes. also, by wearing the same stud and keeping your ears/piercing clean, you'll allow your ears to develop something like a callus on the inside of the hole that will allow you to wear more earrings (other than just 'good' ones) and help you avoid any reactions or rejections by the new piercings.

The stud they put in may be extra thick to help make a good sized hole. If so, you can change to a different earring, but make sure you wear the original at all other times.

For my first hole I wore the original studs for months, and haven't ever had any problems. The second I took out sooner and now the hole isn't as smooth as the other.

A minimum of six weeks, longer if your ears are still sensitive. A good first set of earrings should be high quality gold (unless you're sensitive to it as I am), stainless steel, or surgical steel. Avoid silver earrings until your ears are comfortable with swapping jewelry, as silver can tarnish and possibly cause infection. Nickel-laden earrings (the common $5-$15 stuff) can cause irritation in some people, especially if it's your first 'official' non-stud earrings.
