If you are serious and talking about the natural numbers look up the peano axioms. Basically you start with an empty set and have something called a successor function which tells you how to define the next set inductively. Our numbers are just names for the cardinality of those sets.

emptyset = e = 0
{e} = 1
{e, {e}} = 2
{e, {e}, {e, {e}}} = 3 ,........

cardinality just means how many elements are in a set.

If you are not serious just go 1,2,3,4,5,6,.......

It's a simple procedure really. You start with a set of subjects you wish to count. Next, you select a subject in your set. This initial subject is traditionally given a value of "1". From this point, you select another subject and add an addition value of "1" to your previous total. You repeat this algorithm until all of your subjects have been counted making sure you did not count any of them more than once. This can be done by separating a processed item from the group or by remembering it was "already counted", if your mental faculty allows for this. The result of this should be the number of items in your set.

thus, 5 + 4 = 9

if you hav to count 6 + 5... the procedure is 6 in the mind and five in ur fingers.. after six.. count seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven..

thus, 6 + 5 = 11
