In Colorado, all it takes is one night PLUS representing to someone, anyone, that you are married. That might occur if you sign in at a motel as Mr. and Mrs, tell your neighbors that you are married, or jointly sign a lease, car loan, income tax return, etc. Of course, both parties must be single and not under duress.

Common law marriages are legally binding in states that recognize them and must be dissolved by divorce, just like other marriages.

I think you will find that the states which have in the past had areas that were isolated are more apt to allow common law marriage. That's because on the frontier sometimes it was a long time between visits from the traveling preacher and in the meantime babies could be born.

Good question I thought there was something called a "common law marriage" where if you live with a person for seven years you could consider yourself married but I don't know how "legal" that really is.

In Texas you are common law after 2 months of living together. Depends on your state's laws.

There are different laws for different states, which includes the number of years. It is legal in some states yet not in others.

i don't think that law exist anymore, but after 7 years of living with someone marriage might not be a bad idea

Where I live, no. But they are legally a couple. IN some areas, the're consiodered engaged.
