They claim that they do based on involuntary bodily reactions. I don't believe lie detectors are always acurate.

Yes, most of the time.

If you have nothing to hide, then there's no reason to be nervous. The nervousness in your muscles give you away.

Although there are some liars out there who actually believe what they're saying is true. In such cases, they can fool a lie detector test.

Not really. They are so unreliable that it's illegal in the US for private employers to use them as a condition for employment. There's a good book on lie detectors called A Tremor in the Blood by David Lykken. Also, good article at http://archive.salon.com/health/feature/2000/03/02/lie_detection/

There's a group that has a web site at http://antipolygraph.org/index.shtml with some interesting links as well.

They aren't always accurate. If you're taking a lie detector test you have to be really calm your nerves cant go crazy or it would say that you are telling a lie when you are actually telling the truth. The trick is to believe your lie say it to yourself so much that after a while you will start believing it yourself. If you believe your lies then you'll be able to fool the lie detectors.

I have heard that they are wrong about 15 - 20% of the time, and that is when they are tested under highly controlled experiments, so you can imagine the rate they are failed when some moron is out to hang your ***..... NEVER take a polygraph if you are ever accused of something....

they detect changes in your heartrate, blood pressure, and other things related to pressure, such as when lying. this usually works on people, but rarely there are people who can "trick" the machine, because these factors don't change when they lie...works well enough to be effective

No, they do not. Not with a high enough degree of accuracy to legally warrant their use, anyway.
