Some motherboards prevent changes to the MBR if virus protection is enabled in the bios. Make sure you have disabled virus protection from your bios before formatting.
Don't forget to turn it back on after installating Windows.

Just use the WinXP CD as a boot disc. Make sure that your PC can boot from CD (Enter bios, and first boot sequence should be CD, or ATAPI). Then Wndows will start to load some files, follow instructions. When comes the step of finding the hard drives, it will show you all the drives you got. Use arrow up, down from keyboard to select the one you want to format. Hit Enter, and use Quick NTFS Format. After reaching the 100 per cent (Format), shut down computer, eject Win cd disc. You're done!

You cant format the hard drive when you're logged into Windows. You have to create a Win98 Boot disk (You can find one online) and boot off of it. From there you can format.

don't waste time in trying complex things. Take out hard disk, put it into another PC as an additional drive, delete all files from it. Right click on that drive & format it.
Thanks :)

maybe your formatting it with your OS on the run. if not try to partition it first then format. trying to divide your drives can also help to elliminate some bad sectors of your HD that causes your format to failed

I tried the same on mine and found that the hard drive was "crashed" You can buy new ones fairly cheap. Go to western digitals site to reference the one you need. By the way, how did you log on here if your computer is crashed????

Get a Windows XP CD. Put it in and make sure you boot from CD and not Windows.
The rest should be pretty easy.

Download this:
http://dban.sourceforge.net/
Then follow the instructions to mount it on a CD or floppy disk.
Don't come back and say "it doesn't work." It will if you follow the instructions.
