There's a lot going on in that book. You may want to consider renting the movie. It would take less time than reading the book.

Two versions of the book were made into movies The Shining 1980 starring Jack Nicholson and Shelly Duvall is far more enjoyable to watch, but the 1997 remade mini-series starring Steven Webber and Rebecca DeMornay... (lame in a lot of ways because it has to be edited for television) Editing a Stephen King book is like a porn film where no one is naked...but alas....The 1997 version is still more faithful to the actual book. I say rent them both, but base whatever purpose you have (I assume a report) on the 1997 film. If that is too much effort go to:

Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) becomes the caretaker of the Overlook Hotel in up in the secluded mountains of Colorado. Jack, being a family man, takes his wife (Shelley Duvall) and son (Danny Lloyd) to the hotel to keep him company throughout the long, isolated nights. During their stay, strange things occur when Jack's son Danny sees gruesome images powered by a force called 'the shining' and Jack is heavily affected by this. Along with writer's block and the demons of the hotel haunting him, Jack has a complete mental breakdown and the situation takes a sinister turn for the worse.

The website http://www.houseofhorrors.com/shiningbook.htm has a summary. You should really read it yourself though.

And I can't resist adding this Simpsons quote/clip:

Willie: He has the Shinning!" Bart: "Don't you mean" Shining"? Willie: "Shinning", Lad. You want to be sued?! Bart: "Right, the Shinning" ...

Go to the library and get the book on tape and listen to it. The movie was good but the book was better as with any Stephen King novel.

I take it you are in summer school. Sorry we have all graduated already, and are not doing your homework.

Maybe instead of being on your computer, you should go read the book.

And don't rent the movie. Heads up. They are different. The ending especially.

I can't type that much because my wrist is broken! Go to this site:
http://www.houseofhorrors.com/shining.htm

The "shining" refers to "second sight" and being able to see the past or have deep intuition about people and places.
