Microsoft discovers problems in its operating system or programs that can either directly cause you trouble or expose your computer to hacking. They make fixes that they distribute automatically that repair these bugs in the system.

Hackers actually use the repair list to devise attacks on those that do not do the updates. It is important to keep them updated. That, backups and anti-virus / anti-spyware are the best things you can do to keep the bad guys off of your computer.

The point of windows updates is for your computer protection. People who do not update are leaving the door open for virus's worms..trojans.. and other stuff. It is your computer so if you do not get your updates do not cry on anyone's shoulder when you are infected.

It just takes up your hard drive space, that's all! I have never download an update before, and there's no reason for me to. I've been using computer for more than 12 years, and I still have no spywares/viruses! My systems seem fine and runs very smooth!

The new things have security fixes that prevent you from hackers. Personally as an IT person, as long as you have antivirus and aren't in a hacking gang they are redundant.
