One cannot keep up a life of lies forever, even if it is on-line. Why would they base their entire persona on lies and destroy any chance of what they truly want with the other person? This just baffles me, as you hear so many stories of liars on line.

When I ask this question, I am referring adults who are seeking adult friendships/relationships. I am NOT referring to predators that are looking for children.

I think I would agree with those two fantasy theories, but also say that lying is an easier performance of imagination than ..... other modes of fiction generation. Lying is a simple contradiction of the facts and not informing the listener that they are conradicting fact (dishonesty). Dishonesty is mostly against theirself as they believe no harm could come from it. They tell their self they shall make up for it later, but I doubt they ever get that far, and if they do and fail to correct the errors, trouble. Generally people believe that love is a product which is rewarded to the person who performs best in mind, body and bank account, hence the lying.

I honesty dont know, I have had friends from online ,(not including my 360), and developed friendships with people for years now. Met most of them in person and so far everyone was pretty much who they said they were. Or atleast didnt have any kind of discrepancies that would hurt or harm me or anyone. That really sucks if you have come in contact with someone like that. I wish I could tell you what the secret is to avoiding this, but I just go with my gut feelings. Good luck

Probably for the same reason a non adult creates a fake persona based on lies.

i am not sure creating a whole new personality online is all that different from what we do in real life. If someone was to ask you to discribe yourself to them, say at a bar or something. Would you begin by telling them your faults or would you tell them things that are what you think are your better qaulities? In reality, we all wear masks of one kind or another and change them depending on where we are and who we are with. I think being online just accentuates it more, meaning it is more noticeable and more easily perceived. (sorry abou the spelling its late here)

One possible explanation is they are trying to live out the fantasy of being what they perceive to be their perfect selves. Probably with no intention of ever actually meeting their on-line acquaintances. It's like living in a dream world and seeing what it would be like if they were indeed the person they are trying to pass off to strangers.

i think they like the thrill of it . Like it's a game. They are quite selfish , but they also don't think they are in the wrong until it has done some damage. If they really respected thier partner in the first place this wouldn't even be an issue.

This is the only place I get to run a Rubber Ducky Ranch...lol
Seriously though, I'm honest otherwise. Maybe they don't realize it all comes out sometime. They get to be someone they always wanted to be? I don't know, I don't do it.

Because they are so unhappy with thier own lives that they feel they have to make up a fake one just to be interesting or to gain someone's affection.

I guess it allows them to live out their fantasies. Allowing them to tell people they look a certain way. The way they wish they looked. Tell them about jobs they wish they had, etc. I guess it allows them to escape their everyday lives, which may be quite boring.
