The ice won´t make you sick...as Mexicans we do not drink tap water, we have bottled water that has been treated differently.
You do not need to brush your teeth with bottled water, that is an exageration of people with fears beyond normal, you can wash your mouth with tap water, it tastes a bit salty because well...it´s Cancún and the water is what we call "hard", other than that is cool.
Beverages are prepared with hygienic procedures in order to receive millions of tourists from all over the world and avoid everyone to be sick...the point is to get people to come back not to send them to bed.
I hope you enjoy our hospitality...Welcome to Cancun!!!

Sorry to say this, but everyone is exagerating. I've lived in Cancun for 2 years and have no problems with water. These are my tips:
- NEVER drink tap water, even if the hotel says its filtered
- you can brush your teeth with tap water, and if you accidentally swallow a few drops, don't get desperate... nothing will happen to you
- in all the DECENT hotels and restaurants you can trust their ice as well.
- all soft drinks and beer are also safe

It really depends on the bar. Also of nicer resorts use filtered water throughout the place. That doesn't mean you won't get Montezuma's revenge at some point, but that may just be due to nerves, sun, etc. I know anytime I travel anywhere, it takes some getting use to. Make sure to drink plenty of water and wear lots of sunscreen, the sun is a lot closer to you in Cancun than in the US.

I've been there 4 times, and I haven't gotten sick yet. Maybe a little hung over from all the drinks though! I did use bottled water to brush my teeth, and always made sure that I was given bottled water when I drank water.

Ice will make you sick, they make it from tap water. Don't trust the filtered water signs. Don't drink anything that isn't from a sealed bottle. Instead of mixed drinks - drink bottled or canned beer.

It can, but I usually counter act this with drinking a lot of bottled water. Don't buy their "our water is filtered" B.S. Make sure you ask for bottled water (and I mean they HAND you the bottle..not out of a 5 gallon jug behind the bar that you KNOW they fill with their own water). Brush your teeth with bottled water too, and take some Pepto every day. A small price to pay for paradise. :)

I've heard that on the news from health officials here. They've said that you shouldn't even consume fountain pop there because they use the same water with co2. But the rule is if its in a sealed container that YOU break the seal on you can have it. Yep even the ice there can make you sick.

it can, my travel agent told us to take pepto bismal tabs for a week before going (2 a day) to keep from getting as sick, (still did), but don't drink anything made with water (tea, lemonade, anything). Ice in small quantities isn't too bad though.

HaHa! their water isn't poison! lol, i think the alcohol will make u sicker than the water in the ice. think about it if it did then people wouldn't go to cancun, or they wouldn't drink mixed drinks...and they do.
