If you enjoy the subject, I highly recommend reading LaFayette. He was the big supporter of the American Revolution and later went back to France to help... They wanted to make him king, but he turned them down.

France was ruled by the royal Bourbons.....Louis XVI was the last Bourbon king until after Napoleon was defeated and a royal ruled for a while. basically it was a monarchy.
