yes they put you under anaesthetic through a small needle in the back of your hand, and they gently scrape the lining of your uterus, you are under for about 20 minutes in total and will wake up with just a slight cramping feeling.... some people dont get the cramping, usually go home the same day even after a few hours but will have to have someone come and pick you up you cannot drive for 48 hours after an anaesthetic, you can return to work after a few days if you recover well, you will get a period for a few days after it as well. and take your monthly cycle from the day of the operation. Not all D&C's are done for miscarriges, some for dysfunctional bleeding, mennorhagia(heavy periods), or people who have no menstral cycle and they are trying to determine the problem, also people have a d&c because they have uterine polyps or need a biopsy done at the same time

From what I've heard, some doctors do and some don't. My doctor would have if I had needed one, but the placenta came out on its own. They will usually give you time during your miscarriage and for up to a week afterwards to get everything out on your own. D & C is usually a last resort. If you are needing one, then I'm sorry you are going through this. I know that it is very difficult to loose a child, even so early in the pregnancy.

You will be under supervised sedation. You will be completely asleep. Do not worry. If you are having any sort of pain right now, the D & C will seem God-given. You should become pain free after about a week. The procedure is very minor and millions of women have had it done, (including myself and being a nurse). Good Luck!

I had this done immeidately I gave birth to my daughter, because a piece of the placenta had torn off in me and didn't come out. I was wide awake during the whole thing. I bled out and started to go into shock, so I dont remember feeling any pain.

I was hemorraging during a miscarriage. The E.R. doc advised he needed to do a D & C (dilation and cutterage) asap, so I wouldn't bleed to death. They asked me if I wanted to be anesthesized or awake...I chose the former. I don't remember a thing. There was some mild cramping for a day, but thats all.

I have had two D & C's. I was supposed to be asleep for both but woke up too early with one.
Physical recovery was quick...the first time you pee might sting a bit but it gets better pretty quickly after that. It's the emotional part that was harder for me to deal with.

I've had two partners go for one. One was put out (I presume you mean given general anesthesia) and the other wasn't.
