I wouldn't depend on a dog for protection from invasion. Most dogs while they may bark seldom do more than bark. In my job, firefighter/EMT and part time exterminator, I enter peoples homes daily. I have yet to have a dog, large or small, scare me enough to leave. If I was entering a home for unlawful purposes I know that I could lure a dog to a safe area with food if it bothered me. Best deterrent for home invasion and burglary, have a security specialist or electrician survey your home and install exterior lighting. If you are still uncomfortable a good security system would do nicely.

Chows are very loyal to their families, and interesting to look at also, like a cross between a bear and a dog. Problem is, they won't like your friends either, just you and the family. They are VERY protective, and need a lot of discipline.

Idea: get a pair of chows and train them. Then put up signs near entry points that say "THESE PREMISES PATROLLED BY AN ATTACK TARANTULA".

Nobody will ever bother you again.

House parties could be a problem, though.

Rhodesian Ridgebacks. They're beautiful, and don't bark unless they feel threatened; naturallly. They are used in Zimbabwe to hunt lions that live too near villages. They are also extremely cute in early age, and very handsome in their later years. They also have a rather long life expectancy, suprisingly long for a dog of its size. I've had mine for 8 years now.
