British forces landed in Norway in 1940.. The ground work for the INvasion of France was laid in Dieppe in 1942 by the British and Canadiens, and although a technical disaster, much was learned about assaulting fortress Europa.. After the Americans and British linked up and knocked out the Germans in Africa, the attack on the 'soft underbelly that became a tough old boot' began in Sicily in 1943..

All of those 'invasions' precluded the landings at Normandy in June 1944

It was the African front...so Sicily actually. The British had the French front after we made it across the Mediterranean sea.
