My swordtail has been pregnant for a long time, and I was wondering how I could speed up the birth-giving process.

Sordtails females will start getting white underneath and or close to it and as for inducing labor forget it there fish but I would isolate the female and put her in a breeder because she will eat her young and if you don't have a breeder then you need foxtail for the young to hide in if 2 or 3 of the young survive consider your self lucky and all the others will be eaten. Unless you put her in a 5 gallon tank and get her out of there right after there born your chances of seeing any more than that survive is slim

Are you sure that she isn't having them every month or so, and they get eaten up by her or other fish, before you see any? Make sure that you tank has a lot of plants for the fry to hide in. Plastic plants are fine. One plant that I bought was called baby grass, or something like that. It was round, about the size of your thumbs and index fingers making a circle, flat on the bottom with real dense grass like plastic material that the babies could hide in.
The fish will develope quicker if the temperature of the water is warmer. Don't go over 82 degrees. The only thing, it will age your mom fish too.

Don't even try. She will give birth when she is ready. If you put something in the water that caused her to give birth now the babies would be weak or deformed or dead.
