The folder and the directory are actually the same. The only difference is how they are viewed. Most Windows OSes(Operating Systems) are what is called GUI(Graphical User Interface) including XP. In these OSes, a directory path is displayed visually by a folder for the user to easily manipulate. On the other hand, OSes such as DOS or Unix are text based. These OSes use text to display directory paths.A hard drive that has directories created by folders in a GUI OS can be viewed in a non-GUI OS. How the directory is viewed is the only difference.

A folder is just another name for a directory in Windows XP. Is there some difference, or a specific thing you are trying to accomplish? Additional information would be helpful.
