I personally believe it does. If you consider the historic cycles through which every world dominating power structure (Medes, Persions, Greeks, Romans, etc) has passed, you will undoubtedly find that prosperity lead to ever increasing societal degeneration over the generations prior to its collapse. With prosperity came liberality, apathy, and moral decay. One would think that a society that is prosperous and enjoys more food, more wealth, and greater freedom from toil would become increasingly generous, benevolent, and moral. History indicates the opposite is true. In Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs model, growth is the result of satisfaction of needs. Human needs are grouped into levels. Basic life sustaining needs (air, water, food, shelter, etc.) must be satisfied before the satisfaction of needs in the next higher level ( companionship, love, recognition, etc.) can be achieved. When a society reaches the highest levels and most of the lower level needs are met satisfactorily, the search for physical gratification becomes paramount and leads to all sorts of moral depravity. Addiction, homosexuality, and the quest for supreme power and control. We seem to develop a need to exert power and control over other people, groups, governments, and ultimately the conquest of the world. The best way to exert power and control is to deprive others of basic necessities and thereby force them back into the lower levels of need in an attempt to eliminate competition. This leads to corruption.

I don't know that prolonged prosperity over generations weakens and corrupts a community but it can weaken the family. There's a saying that third generation money can't hit the side of a bull with a banjo.
There's gotta be SOME truth to that.

I have to look at the reverse, India. India has been a semi periphery country and most of the country has been impoverished. Their motivation, dedication, and determination are making them one of the fastest growing economies in the world. So if poverty makes you more determined, I believe with more wealth would tend to make people less motivated.

It "softens" them and gives them a false sense of security. They also lose touch with the rest of the world.
