More American means more American then British or more American than German. Some American cities are more American then others. But American don't mean old white men and women with a white picket fence and all their kids went to med school and are all doctors. We have Mexican American cities and China Town which is American with a China twist.

I believe where the crime comes from is the laws are not as harsh as other places. I have read where is you steel something in other countries they will cut off your hand. And you could get stripped of your clothing and spanked in a public place for crimes. Drugs could mean death.

Well here you get busted with drugs you get a fine. You break into someones home and get hurt you can make the person that owns the home pay for your med bills and the home owner might go to jail for intrapment if they try to catch the bad guy. You break the law here you can bet you can get away with it if you can get the money.

Too much freedom is the problem.

Well, I would think that if someone referred to a city as 'more American,' they probably think that the vibe on the street feels American. For example, if you go to city in Japan, Russia, Italy or France, there is a vibe that feels like you are in each respective country.

As for American cities being more violent and having more crimes than cities in other countries, its true.

That doesn't mean that violence doesn't occur in other cities. look at what is going in the mid-east, it just means that the average civilian walking down the street is more inclined to commit a violent crime on the streets of American cities than in other countries. To clarify, this is a one person to another person crime, not mass murder like psycho terrorists.

In countries like France, for example, the crimes that are committed on city streets are more along the lines of pick pocketing. In America, there are some streets that you wouldn't walk to walk down without a police escort as something more violent could happen. For example, getting robbed at gunpoint. Or, shot b/c you got in the way of gang cross fire. That is why you want to know the areas in a city where you should and shouldn't go.

Hope that helps clarify anything you may have heard.
