Your friend sounds pretty soft, maybe he's from France or something. Hitting a player at bat as retaliation -- let's say to get back at a team for one of your guys who got hit by a pitch -- has been part of the game for a long time... as long as you don't aim for the head -- that's against the unwritten code of honor or whatever.

Ok I agree with your friend to the point that it is wrong to intentionally hurt someone, however he is kinda WAY out there with the rest of his overreacting theory.
That said, I am a hypocrit as I myself as a catcher gave the signal to ping the batter in retalliation. It is part of the game and yes the balls are thrown hard however more often than not the batter is hit in the thigh or another part of the anatomy that will sting but not actually damage the batter. I do know right from wrong but sometimes you gotta do what ya gotta do!!

It's part of the code. They plunk one of yours, you plunk one of them. Diamond justice.

That being said, there are some conventions. When you are up there plunking someone, you hit them from the waist down, he butt being the safest target. Anything above that can seriously hurt someone (ribs, wrist, elbow, back)

And never at the head. Nobody (either side) respects a headhunter.

And pitchers getting run for brushbacks is insane. Guys step into the batter's box with more armor than a member of King Arthur's court and they are afraid of being pitched inside. Boo hoo hoo.

Another poster was absolutely right, a guy hits a home run and is a little too proud, the next guy was getting a really good look at Mr. Spaulding.

Old school baseball is what it's all about man! If a pitcher hit one of your guys and especially if it was to be believed as intentional, it is natural to plunk the next guy as long as it's not a beanball. In the old days it was understood that if you hit a homerun off a pitcher, the next guy would get knocked down. Not hit, but backed off the plate and all batters understood this. Today you see guys admiring long homeruns like Bonds etc, If anyone would have done that against Bob Gibson of Don Drysdale in the 60's they would have got knocked on their rears their next time at the dish! The old school guys played the game right!

It's okay to hit a batter in baseball as retaliation in a 2 reasons. 1. The fans love it when there team hits batters. 2. Pitchers need to protect their teammates.

I've hit batters in retaliation or just pure hate. I think its a part of baseball and pitching. It keeps the opposing players on edge abd lets them know you're not afraid to hit them.

Well yea, the batter has to have a healthy respect for the opposing team and especially the pitcher. If you know there is a potential for you to get beaned when you are up to bat, it may influence your willingness to do things you shouldn't to begin with. Tell your bf to grow a pair.

I can understand why you feel the way you do but in my opinion I would never hit another player as retaliation.
Some players do try and get hit on purpose so that they can get on base but this is still unsportsman like!
Accidents happen and players do get hit but there really is not good reason to retaliate!

It is okay if the pitcher wants to. If he feels uncomfortable that a manager is forcing him to hurt someone, then he shouldn't feel compelled. If the manager has a problem, meet in the parking lot after the game. If the pitcher is ok with it, plunk the shi* out of him.
