i never found the exact meaning of that word EGO ,but all one having several meaning,but shakesphere express the exact meaning for that ,i.e., EGO -MEANS "EDGE OF THE GOD" E-edge,GO-god.is it right or not.i,e people who are believe them as they are only super personality in the universe.

Here's a good definition I found:

1. The self, especially as distinct from the world and other selves.
2. In psychoanalysis, the division of the psyche that is conscious, most immediately controls thought and behavior, and is most in touch with external reality.

a. An exaggerated sense of self-importance; conceit.
b. Appropriate pride in oneself; self-esteem.

It's really only 3b above which relates to our current understanding of the word. Originally, I think the meaning of the word is more about your conscious self/self-awareness.
