The perm works through a chemical called Ammonium Thioglycolate, but that chemical takes 48 hours to fully activate the curl in your hair. If you wash your hair in the first 48 hours, you wash away the chemical and your hair doesn't get a good curl. Within a week you may have trouble controlling your hair. Don't wash again for a full 72 hours so that you don't disturb the curl any further. If you do need to get rid of the perm smell, rinse your hair with a little vinegar, which will take away the perm smell and reactivate a bit of the curl. But DON'T do that til the end of the 3rd day after the perm.

You can wash your hair with water alone after the first 24-48 hours. But if you wash it with shampoo or conditioner it might wash out the chemical in the perm. Perms can be pretty expensive, so I wouldnt neglect the "dont wash your hair" rule unless you wanna be back at the hair dresser the next day.

They tell you that so you don't wash the chemicals out of your hair and risk losing the curl. I used to get perms and always washed my hair the minute I got home. Couldn't stand the smell. I never had a perm wash out or anything. I always wished it would wash out a little anyhow....at the beginning it was always too curly for me.

Washing your hair takes some of the perm out of it and so when you do wash it, some of the activator washes out with it and your perm will not hold as long as it would have.

I never understood that. My mom is a hair dresser as well as my aunt and they put perms in for 20 years and not one has ever come out because it was washed. You go to someone in a booth somewhere and that's the first thing they tell you. The minute my mom takes out my rollers, she washes my hair big-time. Who the heck knows?

Supposedly, it will loosen the curl but I think that's a bunch of hooey. I permed for years and always washed it the very same day. Never had a problem. Ever.
