I did this several years ago. BMW (and Mercedes, Audi, Volvo and other makes) offer European delivery programs. They have done it for years, so it's a straightforward process. Factory visits, insurance, shipping to the US is all-inclusive. Check the BMW USA website for more info. They describe the program, from ordering, scheduling and build tracking, factory visit, tourist and driving information, regulations on how many months you can drive in Europe, drop-off locations -- the works.
You work thru a US dealer to build out the options & schedule the delivery date. Usually, you need about 3 months lead time, but end-of-the-year production schedules might mean some delays so you would need more time. If you were to start today, you would get a MY2007 vehicle. But check the dealer for best info.
Dealers have to make a profit on each car they sell. A Euro delivery counts against one of their allocations, and that reduces one from their monthly shipments in the US.
Don't expect a big discount from the US MSRP because the main discount you get (that is, not having to pay the German VAT tax) is paid at the backend when your car arrives in the US - it's your states sales or excise tax. I got 2 dealer quotes - one was a straight discount % applied to the base car and the options. The other approach was a deep discount on the base price (nearly the invoice), but the options were priced close to full US MSRP. They were essentially equal.
Payment is thru a sizable initial deposit. Then you must arrange financing or full cash payment fairly close to when the factory schedules your car build and assigns a production number to your car.
In any event, new BMWs are sold on allocation thru all the US dealers, so they don't need to give significant discounts on Euro deliveries. They pretty much sell everything they get from the factory.
It's a nice feeling to see your own car in the factory delivery area and to drive it around Europe. And when you return to the States, you get that new-car feeling a second time when your dealer calls to say it's ready for pickup.
Good luck and have fun.
