It seems that the internet has made communication between people much easier, but since that communication is entirely written, with no face to face contact, it's impersonal by its very nature.

This in and of itself isn't a problem, but it seems that human nature is such that we feel the need to compete, and therefore act (pardon the pun) catty toward one another.

Am I imagining all this, or is most impersonal communication (i.e. not face to face) mean-spirited, or at the very least ultra-competitive, by nature?

In a way.. Yes you are right.. It takes away the 'personal' feeling of being able to actually talk with people.. Aside from this, people takes the advantage of making up another personality which is definitely opposite of their real ones.. Its like deceiving people.. That's why I'm not agreeing with online relatioships..

On the other hand, the internet enables people to communicate in an easier manner (emails) and share thoughts real time.. Those who are a bit shy in reality can speak up more in the internet.. This way, it cures their shyness (one way or another)..

So, pros and cons of the internet as a medium of communication! ^-^

The internet is good, but most people use it for bad things such as illegal downloading. I don't think myspace or anything corrupt society, but I don't think we need them.

Illegal downloading is stealing. If people weren't so f*cking cheap and society had some morals we would all be better off.
