tell me what he is driving and what he plans to replace. replacing just pads is the easiest thing in the world to do. $1000 is nuts. even if he was putting on new rotors and calipers. i can walk you trough it step by step.

Changing your own brakes is a bad idea if you aren't trained. If your husband changes the brakes himself, the next person to drive that car will most likely get in an accident

First off, what do you drive? Second, what is he going to be doing to the braking system for it to cost $1000? Is he going to replace everything on the brakes? A normal brake job is around $500...

It would better to pay the 1000. To fix one's own brakes, or other car parts, with out any auto mechanic knowlege, is suicide. BUt I just had my car serviced recently, and it cost me less than $500.

The break is the simplest part of the car. However it is also one of the most crucial. Have him start to take classes at the local community college in auto mechanics. If he is going to work on his breaks, have him take around the block trips every time he does something to the breaks to test it out.

Brakes are simple and cheap to fix, 1000 dollars? outrageous
If he doesn't know brakes do the car left side then right side that way he can compare his assembly to factory assembled side if he forgets something.

My husband owns his own garage so I asked him. He said it would all depend on what all he is planning to change. Pads, rotors, brake hardware, wheel cylinder, calipers? It all depends on which of these he is changing. Feel free to IM me if you would like, I can try to help better if I knew more of what his plan was.

Very bad idea. But I think 1K is too high. Get another estimate. Take it to the mechanic before your hubby gets ahold of it.
