She had a story to tell, and she had told it, in style! She has always said that she has had the whole series planned, including how book 7 would end, right from the start. She is a literary genius, and her work shows it. For some good background info on JK Rowling and her education, go to this site, and read the first couple of pages.

Here's a bit of an excerpt:
"Ms. Rowling made the mistake of telling reporters during the marketing of the first book that she had had some difficult times writing it. The story of her being a single mother on the dole striking it rich has since that time become the predominant image in people's minds because every media story about her includes it. This image has made it impossible for many to consider her work as they would, say, a book by Jane Austen or George Eliot. How many welfare moms do you know who have double firsts in Classics and French from a prestigious university (as Ms. Rowling does) and the ability to write fiction drawing on ancient and medieval philosophy? I bet you can count them on one hand."
