At first, yes. You would think in this type of movie the protagonist always wins. But in hindsight, for Rocky, who from nothing reached as far as a title fight, the win is just cherry on top.
I think this "twist" is what earned it an amazing number of Oscar and Golden Globe nominations (including screenplay for Sly. who would've thought?!) and three Oscars, including best picture.
Sadly, this franchise has been milked dry; and Sly is still at it with is Rocky Balboa (Rocky 6)!

The original Rocky was a brilliant film.
Yeah, goin' back, I thought that the Staillion would coral the win. But, I was just a kid and didn't know much better. So, whether he won or lost didn't really matter to me.
The characters were amazing - Carl Weathers as Appollo, Burgess Meredith as Mick. Both of them were amazing.
A different love interest would have been nice ... Talia Shire never matched the skill of the others in the film.

No. The whole point of the first Rocky was that he "went the distance" and actually achieved something in his life. Also, up until that point, nobody had every gone the distance against Apollo Creed. You need to watch Rocky and Rocky II back-to-back to really understand.

It is defiantly Sly's greatest achievement, the man wrote all the movies and stared in all of them. He added the role of the directing to all the ones after Rocky 1. Rocky won the 1977 Academy Award Winner for Best Picture. On top of that, Rocky also earned two more Academy Awards for Best Film-Editing and Best Director (John G. Avildsen).
I consider Rocky to be one of the best movies of all time, it showed a man could accomplish his dreams. To go the distance.
To Rocky he won that fight.

The loss made it more realistic. Besides, I thought Carl Weathers would have beaten the crap out of Stallone. How he lost in the sequel is beyond me.
But, I wasn't quite sure, especially after both knockdowns.
But come to think of it, we've both spent more time watching boxing movies than boxing matches live or on TV.

No, because then there would not have been Rocky 2-6.

It was predictable for those who followed Muhammed Ali. The bit about Adrien was the big addition to the story.

It makes sense if you follow Joseph Campbell's "The Hero's Journey"... It is definitely better to have him "lose" even though the battle wasn't in the ring, it was for respectability.
