Black metal is a sub-genre of extreme metal, which started in the early 1980s with bands such as Venom, Bathory, and Celtic Frost. The 2nd wave of Black Metal started in the later 1980's/early 1990's primarily in Norway, however not limited to Norway. It garnered criticism from mainstream media because Black metal supposedly embraces Anti-Christianity, Materialism, Misanthropy and sometimes Racism and Nationalism though not all musicians considered black metal necessarily support these ideologies, especially not the latter two (in fact they are almost exclusive to Nazi Black metal), perhaps because standard Black metal ideology is influenced by anti-idealist philosophers who often regarded racism as a form of idealism or philanthropy. More generally, most Black metal musicians are (like punks) strongly anti-collectivist, critics of religion and are advocates of individualism and rational egoism, but Christian Black metal and again Nazi Black metal is forming an exception to this case.

one of my favorite types of music, I personally listen to a lot of Dimmu Borgir, Children of Bodom and Cradle of Filth(this last band isnt always considered black metal). I would explain it as goth type metal music, heavy guitars and you can hear the drums do those double thingys i forgot how that was called, voices are pretty rough or really screachy but it sounds good

ISnt this the same as "death rock"? It sounds very harsh, and mostly deep-voiced with severe clashing of instruments.
